Last weekend North Canterbury CTC held the South Island Compak Championships. Two days of great Compak targets all in perfect weather. A big thanks to David Reid, Mike Blackwell and their merry band of very willing helpers. Huge thanks must go to the sponsors who just give the shoot that someting extra, it also is something that clubs really appreciate especially in these tough economic days. So thanks to Stager Sports, Citizen Watches and Target Products for their extremely generous sponsorship, and I hope shooters just remember them down the track with their purchases!!. Saturday was Club Champs and trophy day, so the targets were set accordingly, and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day with Derek Morgan on a flying ‘poaching’ visit taking the day with 90/100. It was good to see some Northerners come down to compete. I’m thinking they were escaping all the hype and carry on from the Rugby World Cup up North, but a great effort from Derek Morgan, Dale Clark, Ian Holmes and Alex Squires to come South for the weekend. Sunday was a completely different story, being one of two selection shoots for the Trans Tasman Trophy, the targets had to up to that standard. And they were, springs wound up, targets crossing on the boundary pegs, sneaky angles and a couple of just nasty targets were put out for the shooters delight, or not!!
Although the Northerners had the pedigree and world class experience, and you would have put a couple of bob on them, a Junior from Nelson stamped his mark on the day, James Simpson put paid to that, and in fact the first 3 positions were taken out by Mainlanders.
Altogether a great weekend.
Unfortunately North Canterbury have declined to take on the shoot next year, and an announcement will be made soon as to who will host this S.I. event, so do make it a must in your shooting calendar.

Thank you North Canterbury, we had a great time.
It was a spur of the moment decision to come down, made easier by cheap air fares! But the company & targets were good, so well worth the 4am start on Sat morning.
After opening with a 25, I was thinking it might be a bit too easy, but all credit to the target setters, you stiffened them up enough after that to make it quite challenging.
“Pedigree & World class experience” high praise indeed, couldn’t be referring to me, but maybe you guy’s should be happy we didn’t bring Mark V down with us, he texted Ian as we landed back in Auckland, he was not happy that we had neglected to tell him of our plans, so maybe you southerners dodged a bullet there aye?
But congrats to young James, 87 was a very good score on those sunday fields, hopefully we’ll see more of him around the shoots.
We’ll be back down soon i’m sure, just give us another two day shoot as an excuse!
Cheers, Alex
Congratulations James. The years of being dragged round clay grounds in the UK and here in NZ is starting to pay off. You obviously took notice of what dad and I had been saying. Well done mate.
It was indeed a good weekend, I’m glad North Canterbury ‘pushed’ the targets on Sunday afternoon, and I hope it showed local shooters that they can foot it with the ‘big boys’. I would love to see more local guys travelling and competing in the bigger shoots. To that end the Nationals and Grand Prix will be a really good shoot for locals to attend. It’s only a few hours away from CHCH, and there’s every level of accommodation available. The targets will not be beyond shooters, and we will be puting more effort into fun and uniqueness. The shooting area has never been shot before except for (real) rabbits. Entries are now open on this web site.
