August 31st, 2010 Blenheim, Sth Island Nth Zone

The scrub rough club at Blenheim hosted the South Island North Zone Championship over the weekend. The folks up the Awetere valley did a great job by all accounts, putting in a big effort to setup 4 old style fields and were rewarded with a good turnout Saturday and Sunday. Results here…

August 16th, 2010 2010 Presidents Cup, Rotorua

Rotorua Clay Target club saw a good turnout for The Presidents Cup. The club members did a stirling job setting up the field, working all day Saturday in persistent rain and wind. They set a fairly soft field for us to shoot on Sunday, with a 98 being the top score, however under the atrocious weather condition it proved to be a good idea, as most people were very happy at the end of the day.

July 27th, 2010 Compak vs 5-Stand

With the up coming New Zealand Compak Championship and the move away from 5-Stand, we thought we would highlight some of the changes coming your way. Hopefully most of you have read over the Compak rules by now and you are quite familiar with the changes, however here is a brief summary.

Largely there is little difference between the two apart from some minor procedure changes and slightly more defined target trajectories.

Shooting procedure:
- 6 Man squads.
- The extra shooter waits behind stand 1 to view the targets.
- Stand 1 shoots first after each stand change.
- Gun mount is free ie. you can shoot gun up on any target.
- No sighters, the targets will be shown at the beginning of the day, squads must backup to view the targets.
- Once shooting starts, shooters are allowed only 10 seconds between targets.
- There is no need to call out your targets before shooting, the ref. has a copy of the menus in front of him. This helps speed up the round.
- The menus are designed so that the last target of each pair is the first target shot by the next shooter.

Field layout:
- It is recommended that a Compak field has at least 6 traps
- All targets must fly over a 40 x 25 meter box in front of the shooting stands, at some stage in their flight.

You can download the Compak rules or if you have any questions please contact the Sporting Committee or your local councillor.

Below is an article copied from the Field & Game Federation of Australia’s June Newsletter. It details some important points and considerations for field designers and target setters. It was written by Ray McFarlane, arguably one of the most experienced and hard working field designers we have in the Oceania, possibly the world.

May 12th, 2010 A sad day

It is with much regret I must inform Sporting Shooters of the death of Johannes (John) Martens. I’m sure all regular sporting shooters who knew John well, will with us , be thinking of his long time partner Yvonne at this time.  John was one of the true characters of our sport and no longer will that cigar be seen puffing over the hill, accompanied by long time friend and partner in crime Andy Veltmeyer. John lit up most situations, taking little seriously, and his wit and charm will be surely missed by us all.

The servive for John will be at 3:30 on Friday (May 14) at the Morrison Funeral Home Henderson. Leave a comment

Oceania201002316 N.Z. shooters made it to Renmark-Berri (2 ½ hrs North-East from Adelaide) for the 22nd Oceania Sporting Clay tournament. Fortunately to reach Remark you have to travel thru (well near it anyway) the famous Barossa Valley and some of us took full advantage of the wine tours and tasting for a few days preceding the event. Two soft practice fields, set purposely to trap the unwary, were set up for Friday with competition commencing on Saturday for 3 days. The set up was 8 (old style) par cours each one of 25 targets from 4 shooting stands, Saturday and Sunday you shot 3 par cours each day, and Monday 2, totalling 200 targets. Read more »
